Romanians' shopping preferences - Reveal Marketing Research study

• Physical stores remain at the top of Romanians' preferences, according to the data of the latest market study conducted by Reveal Marketing Research.

The data indicate that 90% of Romanians prefer to do their shopping in supermarkets and hypermarkets. This trend is constant, even in the age of online shopping. According to the study, physical stores are chosen especially when it comes to household products.

The study Reveal Marketing Research was conducted online from March 22-27, 2024, on a sample of 1003 urban respondents, with a maximum sampling error of +/-3.1% at a 95% confidence level.

The top of buyers' preferences also includes markets (51%) and convenience stores (42%). An interesting aspect is that mature people over 55 (66%) and men (56% compared to 47% of women) are more likely to choose markets for shopping, perhaps influenced by tradition or the desire to buy fresh products and local.

Only 14% prefer online shopping

Despite the growing popularity of online shopping, the study shows that only 14% of Romanians prefer this method, especially those with higher incomes. Most Romanians (36%) do their shopping when they need products, regardless of the day of the week, reflecting the need for flexibility and adaptability in time management and quick access to the necessary products.

Regarding the proposal to close supermarkets and hypermarkets on weekends, the study shows that there are various opinions among the population. The majority of Romanians (41%) are rather against this initiative, especially men (with a weight of 45%, compared to 36% of women) and those with higher incomes (45% of those with monthly incomes over 8.000 lei) . However, 33% agree with this proposal, with a greater openness among people between 35 and 44 years old, where the percentage rises to 39%.

If the supermarkets were closed on the weekend, the majority of Romanians (64%) would adapt their shopping schedule for the week, 70% of whom are over 55 years old. Others would opt for convenience stores or online shopping, especially young people between the ages of 25 and 35.
