According to representatives from the food industry, the price of bread and bakery products will increase starting in September. The reasons underlying this increase are: the high selling price of wheat in June, the drought faced by farmers this year and the coronavirus pandemic.
Aurel Popescu, the president BREAKING, confirms that the price of wheat is continuously increasing, which will automatically lead to a domino effect of price increases. "In June we recorded the highest selling prices of wheat. Those who have not changed the prices so far will probably change them after buying the new wheat and the market will see an increase in the prices of bread, an increase which is necessary because you have to match the expenses with the income you make", said Aurel Popescu, president of ROMPAN.
The National Institute of Statistics (INS) announces that the price of all foods could be higher in the next period, even reaching a 23% increase. The most noticeable increase will be in bread and bakery products. "In addition to this pandemic, we had the worst drought in 30 years. It is obvious that in autumn we will see the prices of wheat, corn and sunflowers increase because the drought was not only in Romania. When the price of these raw materials increases, we will inevitably see price increases in the chain.", said Dragoș Frumosu, coordinator of the Food Industry Department of PPU-SL.
Specialists draw attention to the fact that the power of the purchase of Romanians decreased with the evolution of the pandemic. If at the beginning of this period consumers were stockpiling food, now the situation is different. Many Romanians became unemployed, so they earned less, which led them to spend more calculated. "The pandemic has pretty much shut down the food industry. Even though we had a start when we were afraid of the large amount of purchases that the Romanians made, then we ended up in the situation of stocking up because the sales decreasedDragos Frumosu said.
