Romanian wheat harvest in 2019

Romania records a production of approximately 10 million tons of wheat, for the third consecutive agricultural year

This year, our country had a harvest of over 10 million tons of wheat, in a slight decrease, by approximately 0,8%, compared to the production of 2018. It is worth noting that, in the last 12 years, since Romania entered the European Union, wheat production at the national level had an upward trend, from three million tons of wheat in 2007 to ten million tons of wheat in 2019.

According to INS statistics, the average wheat production in 2019 was 4,78 tons/ha, slightly lower than in the last two years, when 4,80 tons/ha (2018) were recorded, respectively 4,88 tons /ha (2017). "It is a good production, in a difficult agricultural year, due to the fact that last year's drought did not allow it to sprout in the fall, and wheat, in proportion to 85% of the surface, sprouted in the spring. As a general characteristic, there is a uniformity of productions between the counties, being related to the farmers' ability to work the land and the uniform conditions in terms of climate", the former Minister of Agriculture, Petre Daea, declared for Agerpres.

Currently, the largest area cultivated with wheat in Romania is in Constanţa county (almost 200 thousand hectares), where this year an average production of 5,08 tons/ha was obtained. Wheat production/ha with the highest yield was obtained in Giurgiu counties - over 5,80 tons/ha, Satu Mare - 5,70 tons/ha, Brăila and Dolj, equal, with 5,30 tons/ha. At the opposite pole, the main losses were declared in the eastern and southwestern part of the country, which occurred as a result of the drought during the sowing period.

Regarding the total production of wheat, rye and triticale, there is a slight decrease in yield per hectare compared to the previous year, with 2019 recording 4,75 tons/ha compared to 2018, when the average was 4,77 tons /Ha.
