Betty Ice: A success story of Romanian entrepreneurship

• Betty Ice represents one of the most representative examples of successful Romanian entrepreneurship in the food industry, a brand that has managed to establish itself as a leader in the local ice cream market and continue its evolution under the umbrella of an international giant.

Founded in Suceava, the company illustrates the journey from a local initiative to a leading regional player, with constant investments in technology, quality and expansion.

Betty Ice was founded in 1994 by entrepreneur Vasile Armenean, in Suceava. The company's name comes from Beatrice (Betty), the founder's daughter, symbolizing the family business character. From the beginning, the emphasis was on the production of quality ice cream, adapted to the tastes of Romanian consumers.

In just a few years, the Suceava factory grew significantly, producing dozens of varieties – from standard to premium and super-premium. By 2009, Betty Ice held an impressive market share of approximately 18% in the Romanian ice cream segment. The company stood out through its production capacity (over 100 tons per day at one point), its own distribution network and its presence in seasonal points of sale, including over 180 ice cream kiosks in the summer.

Acquisition by Unilever and the new stage of development

A pivotal moment in the company’s evolution occurred in 2018, when Unilever acquired the Betty Ice business in a transaction valued at approximately EUR 80 million. At that time, the company generated annual sales of approximately EUR 30 million and had over 760 employees. The acquisition allowed the Romanian brand to be integrated into the global portfolio of the world leader in ice cream production, while preserving its local identity and roots. Vasile Armenean continued to play an important role in the initial operational management.

Under the management of Unilever (through the entity The Magnum Ice Cream Company), the Suceava factory has benefited from major investments. Between 2019 and 2025, the company allocated over 12 million euros to modernize the production unit, including 4 million euros in the period 2024-2025 alone. These funds were directed towards expanding production capacity, adopting energy-efficient and environmentally friendly technologies, as well as diversifying the portfolio.

Recent developments

In 2025-2026, Betty Ice marked a new stage by inaugurating a modern production line, which includes the transfer of production volumes from Bulgaria to Romania. The factory has doubled its area and production volume compared to the pre-acquisition period, producing over 120 varieties of ice cream. The objective is to exceed 20 million liters produced annually, with a significant share destined for export (approximately 40% of production).

Today, Betty Ice remains a pillar of the Romanian food industry: an authentic brand, with Suceava roots, combining local tradition with international standards of quality and innovation. Its evolution demonstrates the resilience of Romanian entrepreneurship and the ability to adapt to the demands of a competitive market, while maintaining the focus on quality products made in Romania.

For food industry professionals, Betty Ice's story offers valuable lessons about the importance of continued investment in technology, adapting to market demand, and strategic partnerships that support sustainable growth.
