The fine chocolate dessert was made in honor of the French general Joseph Joffre, on the occasion of his visit to Romania in 1920, at the invitation of King Ferdinand and Queen Maria. Then, the general was also invited to Capşa.
As the tall guest suffered from diabetes, the cake was specially created in a smaller size and with a lot of chocolate, to be lower in carbohydrates and consumed without risk. The cylindrical shape chosen for the Joffre cake was inspired by the French military cap of that era.
