Romania will export wheat again this year

Wheat harvesting is coming to an end in Olt county, farmers have harvested 525.000 tons of wheat. At the national level, experts' estimates show that Romania will be able to export approximately 3 million tons of wheat without affecting domestic needs.

According to the Minister of Agriculture, Adrian Oros, 2.900.000 hectares were sown in autumn, of which approximately half (1.200.000 hectares) were affected by drought to a degree greater than 30%. The largest harvested area is wheat (80%).

Director of the Olt County Agricultural Directorate (DAJ), Gabriela Andronie, announced that there are only a few thousand hectares of wheat left to harvest. Average wheat production is 4,2 tons per hectare, the area being 125.000 hectares.

The Minister of Agriculture, Adrian Oros, stated that the total production of wheat allows Romania to export this year as well. Without affecting domestic needs, our country can sell about 3 million tons of wheat across the borders. "We will certainly have exports, but they will be smaller, because grain production will also be lower. We will soon have the estimates made by the farmers' associations, we will know what the productions are, but from what those in the bakery and milling industry say, the necessary human consumption in Romania is 2.200.000 tons, to which are added about 550.000 tons of seeds , about 400.000 tons of wheat for fodder and about the same amount of wheat for industrialization, for alcohol. So we use a maximum of 3.000.000 tons, and experts' estimates say that this year we will have about 6.000.000 - 6.500.000 tons. So there will be a margin of at least 3.000.000 tons that can be exported", explained Adrian Oros, in a press conference.
