The government announced that the value added tax will drop from 9% to 5% for organic or traditional products certified by the Ministry of Agriculture.
The authorities took this decision because such a facility will make high-quality food cheaper, given that the price of these products is usually higher than that of similar products. The government has taken into account the worrying statistics on the health status of the population, the directions of action in the field of health established at the world level, which encourage the choice of healthier foods. Citizens and consumers in Romania are increasingly demanding high-quality food products and it was considered necessary to take urgent measures at national level to encourage the consumption of high-quality food
"We are considering increasing Romanians' access to healthy, high-quality products, which are increasingly sought after on the food market. We will reduce VAT from 9% to 5% for the delivery of these categories of food, namely mountain, ecological, traditional products authorized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. By reducing the VAT rate on the entire distribution chain, we contribute to reducing the prices of these products and thus encourage people to consume healthy food", said Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă, in the government meeting on Tuesday, May 14.
