Romania – the second largest exporter and importer of wheat in the EU

According to the data published on Tuesday by the European Commission, transmitted by the Reuters agency, quoted by Agerpres, European Union soft wheat exports for the 2022/2023 season, which began on July 1, 2022, reached 21 million tons on May 28 this year, up 13% from the 24,86 million of tons of wheat exported in the same period of the 2021/2022 season.

France remained the largest exporter of soft wheat in the EU this season, with 9,6 million tons exported until May 21 this year, followed by Romania with 3,96 million tons. The next places are Germany with 3,53 million tons of exported wheat, and Poland with 2,85 million tons of exported wheat.

Regarding corn, the EU exported a quantity of 2,87 million tons until May 21 this year, of which 1,64 million tons were exported by Romania. In the same period, the EU imported 23,9 million tons of corn, and a quantity of 1,34 million tons was imported by Romania alone.

Officials of the European stock exchange operator Euronext, announced last week that Romania, the largest corn exporter in European Union, will be considered as a physical delivery zone for its corn futures contract as part of an initiative to increase activity for the contract.

Provisional data announced by National Institute of Statistics (INS) shows that, last year, Romania obtained a grain corn production of 8,2 million tons, from an area of ​​2,47 million hectares, while in 2021 the harvest was 14,82 million tons reported from 2,54 million hectares.
