For the year 2021, Romania holds the first place in the European Union in terms of corn and sunflower production

• For the year 2021, Romania holds the first place in the European Union in the production of corn and sunflower, according to the provisional data provided on 31.03.2022 by the National Institute of Statistics.

On 31.03.2022, the National Institute of Statistics releases a press release with provisional data on vegetable production in the main crops for 2021.
The data show that in 2021, compared to 2020, the cultivated area decreased in grain cereals, grain legumes, potatoes, vegetables and increased in oilseeds.
On the other hand, vegetable agricultural production increased in 2021, compared to the previous year 2020, in cereals for grains, oilseeds, legumes for grains and decreased in potatoes and vegetables.

2021 production compared to 2020

The year 2021 sees an increase in yields on the main crops.
In grain cereals, cultivated area decreased by 1,2%, while production increased by 49,8% compared to 2020, thanks to yields per hectare. The area cultivated with grain corn in 2021 represents 47,3% of the area cultivated with grains for grains, and that cultivated with wheat 41,1%.
Cereal production increased mainly due to the 61,5% increase in wheat production, which has a share of 38,0% of cereal production.
Grain legumes saw a 37,7% increase in production as a result of increased yield per hectare.
In oil plants, production increased by 40,2%, and cultivated area by 1,0%. Production increased in canola by 73,5%, by 32,7% in sunflower and by 7,8% in soybeans.

Decrease in potato and vegetable production

As for potatoes, the cultivated area decreased by 14,3% and the production by 13,9%.
Vegetables show a decrease in the cultivation area, so that production decreases by 1,2%.
If for grapes in 2021, the cultivated area decreases by 1,2%, the production registers an increase by 6,3%, as a result of the increase in the yield per hectare of +7,6%.
Fruit production from orchards increased by 2020% compared to 11,0, due to the increase in yields per hectare, as well as the cultivated areas.

Romania ranks first in the EU for corn and sunflower and fourth for wheat

In 2021, compared to the previous year, Romania takes the leading place among the European Union states in grain corn and sunflower, both in terms of cultivated area and production.
For wheat, Romania is, for the year 2021, in fourth place in the ranking in terms of cultivated area and production, after France, Germany and Poland.
In the area cultivated with potatoes, Romania ranks sixth, after Germany, Poland, Holland, France, Belgium, and in terms of production, in eighth place, after Germany, France, Poland, Holland, Belgium, Denmark and Spain.
