• As spring takes hold, traders' attention is increasingly turning to crop growing conditions.
At the end of last week, rapeseed continued its recovery, testing the EUR 500/t threshold again, while wheat and corn quotes consolidated their positions.
The French wheat market is indecisive, given its limited export performance to third countries. The next three months, between now and the end of the campaign, will therefore be extremely important.
European grains are, however, receiving some support from the falling euro/dollar exchange rate, which, at 1,0820, is at its lowest level since March 10.
Growing conditions this spring for crops in France remain below normal, according to the Céréobs report published Friday by FranceAgriMer:
– Soft wheat 74% "good to excellent", unchanged during the week;
– Winter barley 70% "good to excellent", unchanged during the week;
– Durum wheat 81% "good to excellent", unchanged during the week;
– Spring barley 97% sown, up from 92% last week.
American market
Across the ocean, the growing water shortage in the southern Great Plains is starting to be the subject of much discussion as spring sets in. That's why crop evaluation by USDA will be closely monitored.
Corn and soybeans fell amid concerns about US tariffs and possible retaliation from various countries importing US grains.
Overall, the US grain market is showing some feverish anticipation of further details on the measures to be taken by the Trump administration on April 2.
