• Nervousness and uncertainty continue to dominate agricultural commodity markets in April. The pause "offered" by Donald Trump pushes various countries to enter into negotiations with the White House, but the situation remains undecided.
Only China continues to escalate its tariffs and is now restricting exports of rare earth metals, putting certain US industries at risk. These factors are not reassuring and also explain the recent decline in the dollar index, pushing the euro/dollar exchange rate towards 2022 highs. This has been the main factor in the decline for European wheat and corn in recent days.
While the macroeconomic aspect prevails over the other elements, from a technical point of view, the May maturity for rapeseed continues to increase, and the price difference compared to the new season continues to widen.
Finally, on the supply and demand side, there is a risk of a slowdown in global trade and certainly in demand, which should limit market tension. In the short term, weather conditions will need to be taken into account and, although the weather is currently clear, patterns can change quickly.
US markets also remain under pressure in the face of uncertainty and Donald Trump's daily threats to global trade.
In the field, growing conditions are deteriorating again for wheat, with 47% good to excellent, compared to 48% last week. As for corn, sowing work has started, with 4% of the area sown. The same percentage is at 2% for soybeans and 7% for spring wheat, in line with the average of recent years.
