October 16 – World Bread Day

• October 16 marks World Bread Day, a celebration dedicated to the oldest and most beloved food in human history.

Since 1980, this day coincides with World Food Day, emphasizing the essential role of bread in global food security, and in Romania, since 2012, October 16 is also National Day of Association of Food Industry Specialists.

Bread is not just a food, but a universal symbol of nourishment, community and tradition. From the leavened bread of the ancient Egyptians to the crispy baguettes of France or the traditional pita breads of the Middle East, bread has crossed cultures and eras, adapting to the tastes and needs of each society. In Romania, bread holds a special place in our hearts and on our tables, whether we are talking about the usual loaf, the homemade bread baked on the hearth, the traditional holiday roll or the potato bread, specific to certain regions.

This day invites us to reflect on the meaning of bread, but also on the effort behind each slice. From the cultivation of wheat to the grinding of flour to the skilled hands of bakers, each stage of bread production is a story of work, dedication and respect for the ancient art of baking.

World Bread Day

A tradition that unites

World Bread Day is also a time to appreciate the diversity of this food. All over the world, bakeries, restaurants and even households organize events to celebrate bread: from baking workshops to tastings of traditional and modern varieties. In Romania, this day is often an opportunity to rediscover traditional recipes and to encourage the consumption of artisanal bread, prepared with natural ingredients and without additives.

World Bread Day also reminds us of the importance of sustainability in the food industry. Choosing local ingredients, reducing food waste and promoting responsible farming practices are just a few of the ways we can contribute to a world where bread remains accessible to all.

World Bread Day

A tribute to those who make bread

Behind every loaf of bread are dedicated and passionate people, whose hard work ensures that we all... "our daily bread": farmers, millers, bakers, researchers and food industry specialists. October 16th is also a time to recognize their contribution to the well-being of our communities.

World Bread Day encourages us to pause for a moment and appreciate the simplicity and richness of this food, honoring the work and traditions that make it possible. Whether we enjoy it fresh, with a crispy crust, or share it with loved ones, bread remains a bond of humanity.

I have identified a poetry short but moving, dedicated to bread, written by the Bessarabian poet Gregory Vieru (1935–2009), one of the most beloved contemporary Romanian lyricists, poetry that is part of his volume of poems for children Bee (1964) and emphasizes the simplicity and warmth of bread as a symbol of everyday life, promoting values such as respect for food, for the work of parents and nature – a message perfectly aligned with the spirit of World Bread Day.

The bread

by Grigore Vieru

Beautiful bread,
Removed from the oven,
Good bread,
With a hot face
With the face of a nun,
With the hand of the little father,
Like the sun in summer,
Like a Bulgarian in the country!
