• The price of milk, another basic raw material, is under pressure from massive purchases from EU states.
Given that, at the end of 2022, the figures showed a decrease in dairy consumption on the Romanian market, as a result of increasing retail prices and generalized inflation, an extremely volatile market is forecast for the next six months.
Within the Committee for Agriculture in the Chamber of Deputies, during the debate of a draft law for approval Government emergency ordinance no. 154/2022 president of APRIL (association that represents the interests of processors in the dairy industry), Dorin Cojocaru, warns that in the first half of this year the dairy market will be extremely volatile, following price pressures generated by massive purchases at very low prices from neighboring EU member states .
"The next six months are going to be very difficult for the consumer and the processor and the farmers as well. We are going to watch a very volatile market. The price will crash. Raw material milk with 4% fat comes from Hungary, with transport included, for 1,85 lei at the factory gate. Under these conditions, can we financially support the sector?", stated Dorin Cojocaru.

Milk sales in Romania
From the data APRIL, starting from October 2022, milk sales in Romania have decreased a lot, more than likely influenced by cheap stocks in the EU. Dorin Cojocaru also states: "We cannot bring milk from Ukraine, because it is a third country and the European Regulation does not allow us. But we have to support the local sector, and if the European Regulations allow us, to restrict the resource of the raw material".
Processors are sounding the alarm about the problems faced by domestic farmers, given the fact that neighboring states are depleting their dairy stocks by sending large quantities to Romania at very low prices.
During the debate on the draft law on the establishment of a state aid scheme to support operators in the manufacturing industry of milling products, oils and fats, dairy products and preparations for feeding farm animals, the President of APRIL, Dorin Cojocaru, states that it is necessary to take more measures to regulate the situation created.
