Bread in museums (2). Bread Museum, Oradea

• The most famous bread museum in Romania – the Bread Museum in Cetatea Oradea.

In Romania, the only one, or maybe only the best known Museum of Bread, is located in Oradea Citadel, in a building that housed a functional bakery for 305 years. The museum space wants to reproduce, as faithfully as possible, the history of bread, from the grain of wheat to the baking of the dough in the ancient ovens. In the space where the Bread Museum was set up, the fortress bakery operated for more than 300 years.

The building was erected after the conquest of the fortress by the Austrians, in 1692, by order of General Corbelli, with the destination of a bakery, being equipped with six ovens. Then, during the communist era, the construction was modernized: the furnaces switched from wood fuel to diesel injectors. The bakery at that time had two ovens, one with three hearths and one with two hearths, and behind it was the kneading workshop. In 1997, the bakery was closed.
In 2016, in the building rehabilitated together with the entire fortress, the Bread Museum was opened, where the history of this food is presented.
