• Bucharest, June 16, 2025 – Tetra Pak has published its 2024 Sustainability Report, highlighting a 25% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its entire value chain compared to 2019, a five percentage point improvement over 2023.
In terms of its own operations, the company managed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 54% compared to 2019 and uses 94% renewable energy, staying on track to achieve climate neutrality (net-zero GHG emissions) by 2030. All these advances in environmental protection are complemented by the company's constant efforts to improve living standards and contribute to economic development by delivering safe food anywhere in the world.
Adolfo Orive, President and CEO of Tetra Pak, said: "By 2050, the world population is expected to reach 10 billion people, leading to a 60% increase in food demand.". But while food systems are essential to modern life, they are responsible for more than a third of global greenhouse gas emissions. This growing pressure between the need to produce more food and the need to reduce our environmental impact is a major challenge – one that Tetra Pak is committed to continuing to address. As we show in our latest Sustainability Report, we are focused on developing safer and more sustainable food systems, while reducing our climate impact and contributing to improving livelihoods. We are ready to continue this mission in collaboration with our customers and all our partners.”

Another year of significant efforts
The evolution presented in the Sustainability Report for 2024 demonstrates that Tetra Pak maintains its correct trajectory to achieve the proposed objective for 2030: a 46% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain, compared to the 2019 reference year (according to goals 1, 2 and 3 of the GHG Protocol - greenhouse gas emission classifications, according to international standards).
These results come after another year of significant efforts to decarbonize its operations and support customers in reducing their emissions, through Tetra Pak’s equipment, technology and services. It is progress that reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to work with suppliers, customers and other relevant partners to achieve net-zero GHG emissions across its entire value chain by 2050, compared to 2019 levels.
In 2024, a key contributor to Tetra Pak’s performance in reducing GHG emissions across the value chain was the use of resource-efficient equipment, the implementation of optimization technologies across the entire production facility, and the adoption of packaging solutions with a reduced carbon footprint. These innovations helped food and beverage manufacturers maintain their competitive advantage while reducing their own emissions.
For example, in 2024, GHG emissions from ambient packaged dairy processing lines decreased by 13% compared to 2023 and by 42% compared to the 2019 base year. Among the innovations that contributed to this result is the Tetra Pak® Tubular Heat Exchanger, a piece of equipment introduced this year with a patent-pending Q-corrugation design that has proven to be highly efficient. This configuration reduces pressure loss by 40% (the pressure drops as fluid flows through the tubes), allowing manufacturers to reduce the electricity consumption of the heat exchanger pump – used in essential food and beverage production processes such as sterilization and pasteurization – by up to 40% compared to the previous model available on the market. This results in significant energy savings for Tetra Pak customers and a reduction in their carbon footprint.

Other notable company achievements included in the 2024 Sustainability Report:
- Optimization of food production plants, through advanced Tetra Pak technological solutions, which allowed a reduction in energy consumption of up to 40% and a 60% increase in quality uniformity, thus contributing to combating food waste.
- Providing milk or other nutritious drinks in Tetra Pak packaging to 66 million children in 49 countries through school feeding programs.
- Supporting 84.000 smallholder dairy farmers through 29 Dairy Hubs globally to ensure more stable incomes and a constant supply of raw materials to dairy producers.
- Investments of around €100 million in research and development to improve packaging sustainability without compromising food safety. These investments have led to innovations such as lids made from recycled polymer (in partnership with Elle & Vire) and the Tetra Brik® Aseptic 200 Slim Leaf packaging, with a paper-based protective layer.
- Launch of the award-winning Approach to Nature strategic framework, which includes concrete actions and over 20 measurable objectives, designed to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, supporting ecosystem restoration and increasing water security.
- Increasing the company's involvement with employees across the entire value chain, through opinion polls, impact assessments and interviews conducted by third parties.
- Mobilizing 150 suppliers in the "Join Us in Protecting the Planet" sustainability initiative, dedicated to protecting the environment.
