Bread in museums (3). Bread Culture Museum, Ulm

• The first bread museum in the world is the Museum of Bread Culture in Ulm (Germany).

Museum it covers 6.000 years of bread history. The machines used in the preparation of bread are exhibited, starting with the Stone Age and up to the present day. It is a unique museum, the first of its kind in the world, which offers a fascinating insight into a food with a central role in human civilization, but also an explanation of how the production and social and cultural meanings of bread have changed since throughout the centuries.

The first permanent exhibition dates back to 1960, although the museum was founded in 1955. It was the first and for many years the only museum of its kind in the world. Comprising more than 18.000 exhibits, of which 700 are part of the permanent exhibition, the museum's collections in Ulm cover more than 30 different types of objects related to bread and which show the importance of this food for mankind.

The museum presents how the methods of making bakery products have changed over the centuries and illustrates the social and cultural history of bread.

The bread itself is not part of the collection, the firm belief of the museum founders being that bread is not a museum artifact, but a food that must be freshly baked every day. Instead, in the specialized library there are over 6.000 books and archival writings that complete the collection.
