• Production will not resume even in 2023 at the Bod Sugar Factory in Brașov county. The new shareholders failed to conclude contracts with the farmers.
Farmers from Brasov, Covasna and Harghita counties have not concluded agreements with the factory, and the unit will not even handle packaging for a while, after Ukrainian sugar exports to the European Union were banned until the fall.
Last year, in November, when the company Best Acquisitions completed the full takeover of the assets of the Bod Sugar Factory, after two years from the start of the takeover transaction, the representatives of the factory announced that they intend to resume production starting this year, but now the production unit follows to enter conservation.

The general director of Best Purchases, Mihaela Neagu, states that production at the Bod Sugar Factory will not be resumed this year either, because the farmers in Brașov, Covasna and Harghita counties have not concluded contracts with the factory. She also points out that the beet produced by farmers will be processed, this year, at the sugar factory in Luduș.
"The reason is very simple: we did not find an agreement, and neither did the farmers this year have areas ready to cultivate in the Brașov, Covasna, Harghita area. Those who cultivated sugar beet in the Brașov – Harghita – Covasna area signed contracts with us and the beet will go to the sugar factory in Luduș. We will process there this year, because together with the farmers in the Mureș area, we managed to collect a small area compared to what we wanted, just for the Luduș factory", explained the general director of Best Purchases, Mihaela Neagu, quoted by the local press.

Sugar in the top of the price hikes
In Romania, according to data recently published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), sugar is in the top of the highest price increases recorded in the last year, with a price increase of 58,25% in April 2023 compared to April 2022.
At the same time, according to data sent last week by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the world price of sugar increased in May for the fourth consecutive month, recording an advance of 5,5% compared to April, and reached a level that is almost 31% above that recorded a year ago year.
